Targeting:

Whiting are a fun species to target with the whole family. In the Mackay region, the cooler months produce quality whiting in large numbers. Before you head out, here are a few things to remember when chasing these guys:

  1. Whiting love yabbies, so hit the yabbie beds at low tide with the yabbie pump and stock up on fresh bait before you fish. Yabbies can be kept overnight wrapped in newspaper and sand – and are usable dead if kept in an airtight container with a bit of rock salt. If you want to buy bait, sand worms are effective.

  2. Use light gear. The softer the tip of your rod, the better! Keep to a light combo and a small longshank hook and running ball sinker set up.

  3. Polarized sunglasses will help you locate schools, because you can spot the silver flashes given off by feeding whiting.

  4. Prospect likely areas by long casting into the shallows and slowly retrieving.
