Targeting:

Saratoga (southern) are native to the Fitzroy River system and are stocked in some south-east Queensland impoundments. Most saratoga in the Mackay region can be found inland and south-west of Sarina. Funnel Creek is a good starting point and most of the rivers and creek systems south of there all hold good saratoga. They prefer still waters and slow flowing turbid sections of rivers and can be found sheltering in lily-pads or below fallen timber.

Top Tip

Wear polarized sunglasses and look for small disturbances on the water's surface under overhanging vegetation. Saratoga will often sit just under the surface waiting for bugs to fall in. A well-placed surface lure will almost always result in an immediate surface bite. Keep your lures on the surface and don't be in a hurry to strike - let the fish turn to ensure the hook pulls into the corner of the jaw.
