Targeting:
For its size, nothing hits harder than the mangrove jack. When looking for jacks, look for cut-away banks with overhanging vegetation that creates shade and shadows. Add a submerged snag, and maybe a little oyster rock, in that shadow and you have a perfect mangrove jack haunt. Try firing in low, sideways casts with weedless-rigged soft plastics - if done right they should skip in like a skimming stone and land right in the strike zone. Mangrove jack prefer deeper creeks that hold water at low tide, so avoid shallow, sandy banks.
For bait fishers, live bait is best – jacks love a live herring or small mullet and live prawns. Fish them as close to submerged structure as you dare and be ready to turn their head in a hurry – as soon as they strike they will head straight for structure.
