Targeting:

There are some stonker jewfish to be caught around the Mackay region. These are a fish that respond very well to jigs and soft vibes and can be caught anywhere from holes in creeks and around the inshore islands to offshore shoals up to 50m. They can be tricky to get to bite, and usually feed best at night or around dawn.

If using bait, live or big and fresh is the key. If using lures, big jerkshads or squid imitations hopped off the bottom work well. Jewfish school up and don’t release well in water over 10m, so once you have your quota, it’s best to move rather than trying to release extra fish.
